Bile, which is green in color, promotes breakdown of fats to boost digestion. Thus, the food attains green color when it enters the small intestine. Undigested green food is diverted to the large intestine, where it changes to light brown. This happens because of bacterial activity in the large intestine. However, if the undigested food has traveled at a faster pace through the large bowels, there will be hardly any interaction between the stool formed and the bacteria present in the large intestine. As a result, the stool color doesn't change to light brown and instead appears green.
