Stool softeners as the name suggests, are substances that increase the water-holding capacity of stools and increase the bulk of stool, which in turn stimulates bowel contractions and helps passage of stool out of the body. They are used to relieve problems of constipation and irregular bowel movements. Constipation is a condition in which the person's stool is hard, dry and difficult to evacuate from the body, resulting in irregular bowel movements. Moreover, passing hard stool becomes painful and uncomfortable. People suffering from constipation have their food staying longer in the digestive tract. This results in production of toxins, which make their way into the bloodstream of the body. These toxins can trigger diseases like cataract, arthritis, colon cancer, appendicitis, etc. To prevent all these problems one should use stool softeners.
Come pregnancy and expect significant changes in the body posture. If that wasn't enough, the increasing belly size with each passing day causes hot flashes, headaches and muscle aches, thanks to hormonal imbalance during pregnancy. It is observed that pregnant women also experience green bowel movement. The normal color of fecal matter is light brown and so excretion of green stools is definitely unacceptable. Is green color of stool attributed to hormonal changes or are there any other causes? Let's find out.
Crohn's Disease, Ulcerative Colitis, Pseudomembranous Colitis, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome are intestinal disorders. Also called ileitis or enteritis, crohn's disease causes inflammation of the ileum due to which there is pain and discomfort in the lower sections of the digestive tract. Crohn's disease can lead to the intestines becoming sensitive and sore due to diarrhea. Ulcerative colitis is caused due to the inflammation of the intestinal lining. The intestinal lining is punctuated with ulcers, either scattered throughout or in the form of clusters. The large intestine -- when affected by the disorder -- may pose symptoms of diarrhea with stools being loose and slim in consistency also making the stool color green. Pseudomembranous colitis is the inflammation of the colon when an individual is administered with antibiotics. It may also be caused due to the overgrowth of the bacterium called C. difficile. These intestinal disorders may cause the stool to turn green in color with the consistency being very loose.
