Instead of relying completely upon the above-mentioned remedies, it is recommended that you make necessary changes in your kid's diet. Include lots of fibrous fruits and vegetables in the diet. The reason why high-fiber diet is often recommended to relieve constipation is that, many fibers like pectin, polysaccharides, etc., found in fruits and vegetables are not digested by the body. As a result, they are flushed out of the colon and eliminated from the body. However, these undigested fibers have a tendency to absorb excess water from the colon, thereby rendering softness to the stool. Drinking too much of cow's milk can also cause constipation in babies. Apple or prune juice can help to relieve the problem in babies.
The ingredients in the stool softener do not act as laxative on the digestive system. They only make the stool soft, so as to pass it easily. However, these ingredients have the potential to cause stomach or intestine cramps. Drinking 6-8 glasses of water, while you are on stool softeners, helps to relieve stomach cramps.
As far as normal bowel movement is concerned, there is no specific definition as it depends on several criteria. However, according to the health experts, a medial brown colored stool (or any shade of brown) is considered normal. Occasional yellow stool also signifies normal bowel movement. Other factors that signify healthy digestive system are toothpaste like consistency, sinking in water, presence of little gas, and smooth passing of stool without straining.
Laxatives are used for loosening stools, so that they can easily move through the colon and/or increase the frequency of bowel movements. A laxative could be a drug or a natural remedy like prune juice. As far as drugs are concerned, laxatives can be of different types. They include bulk-forming agents, stool softeners, stimulants, lubricants and osmotics. Though they all aim at relieving constipation, their course of action differs.
